A Scary Moment in Training: Neuer Causes a Stir at FC Bayern

On Saturday, FC Bayern won the Super Cup in Dortmund, and today, Monday, the team began preparations for their home game against Stuttgart to kick off the Bundesliga season on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Manuel Neuer caused a moment of alarm during training.

What happened? In the middle of training, the FC Bayern goalkeeper—who had played the full 90 minutes over the weekend and made a few good saves—was lying on the ground and had to receive medical attention.

Apparently, it was a shoulder issue. According to a report in the TZ, it was noticeable that Neuer had already been making circular movements with his shoulder beforehand—as if he’d been having problems there for some time.

Neuer can continue after receiving treatment

While all the other players on the record-breaking champion’s team took a water break, Neuer received treatment from a physical therapist. The two were in conversation, discussing how to proceed.

After a brief break for treatment, Neuer was able to resume training and, at least, didn’t experience any obvious new problems during the session. That’s certainly a positive sign. The clear plan, at least, is for Neuer to be in goal on Friday.

For now, however, there’s no indication that the goalkeeper will miss the game. And if the issues persist or even worsen, Jonas Urbig is a reliable backup who’s just waiting for his chance to prove himself. Urbig is set to succeed Neuer as the number one goalkeeper after this season anyway and will accordingly see some action again in the 2026–27 season.

The next few days of training will now show whether Neuer’s issue is indeed a long-term one or if his shoulder remains stable. The fact that he was able to complete the entire training session is, in any case, a positive sign for now.
