FC Bayern claimed its first title of the new season right off the bat with a 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund. After the Super Cup victory, Vincent Kompany expressed particular satisfaction with the fitness of his star players and the mentality of his team.
FC Bayern made a strong statement right at the start of the season. With their 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup, the record German champions secured their first title of the new season.
Coach Vincent Kompany was understandably pleased after the match. The Belgian was particularly impressed that Harry Kane and Michael Olise were able to play the full 90 minutes despite their limited preparation time.
“I’m very pleased with the win. Michael Olise and Harry Kane trained with us three times and were able to play the full 90 minutes,” Kompany explained to Sat.1 after the final whistle.
The Bayern coach even drew a comparison to his own playing days: “Back in my day, you’d come back from vacation three to four kilos heavier. Today, the guys have their own personal trainers and come back in great shape.”
Especially with Kane and Olise, it had been unclear before the game just how fit they would already be. Both had joined preseason training late after their World Cup break. Nevertheless, they started right away in Dortmund and held up until the end.
After the Super Cup victory, Kompany also turned his attention to the coming weeks. With Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, two new signings are ready to go, and the coach has high hopes for them.
“Nene and Saibari will give us a big boost this season,” Kompany said.
Brown started the match in Dortmund and even scored the 1-0 goal off an assist from Olise. Saibari came on as a substitute in the closing stages, making his competitive debut for FC Bayern.
On top of that, the squad is set to grow even deeper in the coming weeks. “Lenny, Jamal, and Serge Gnabry are still set to return,” Kompany explained, referring to Lennart Karl, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry.
With that, the Bayern coach made it clear that, despite the successful start to the season, he still sees further potential in his team.
After the game, however, Kompany wasn’t just satisfied with individual players. Above all, he was pleased with his team’s attitude.
“Regardless of today’s result, it was a sign of energy to fight for every ball in every situation,” the 40-year-old explained.

With that, Bayern sent an important message right from the start. The Munich team won everything domestically last season and have no intention of resting on their laurels.
Kompany made the team’s strategy clear: “Some people might think we’ll experience a slump because we won everything last year. But that won’t be the case—we won’t rest on our laurels and will try to win it all.”
The victory in Dortmund was thus more than just the first title of the season. For Kompany, it was above all proof that his team remains hungry even after winning the double.
