“A Threat to Bayern”: Matthäus Warns About the New BVB | OneFootball

Borussia Dortmund is off to a strong start to the new season. With a hard-fought 1-0 win at VfB Stuttgart, BVB has already celebrated its sixth victory in seven competitive matches—a streak that’s sure to catch the attention of FC Bayern.

In any case, Lothar Matthäus sees Dortmund’s progress as a definite challenge for the record champions. The former Bayern captain is particularly impressed by the new composition of the BVB roster.

“Bayern primarily thinks about itself, its quality, and its strengths. But of course, it’s no secret that Dortmund has gotten off to a fantastic start,” he explained in an interview with Sky.

The TV analyst points out a crucial difference compared to previous years.

Matthäus sees a changed BVB

For Matthäus, it is above all the mix within the Dortmund squad that makes BVB such a tough opponent right now.

“As a team, they’re put together differently than in recent years: young, fresh, fast, and skilled at dribbling. The fact that they can win games like today’s in Stuttgart makes the team dangerous for Bayern. It’s not easy to win here, and they’re picking up the points.”

The narrow victory in Stuttgart in particular is likely to reinforce Matthäus’s assessment. Dortmund didn’t have to dominate for the entire match, but still found a way to take home the three points in the end.

It’s exactly these kinds of victories that can prove decisive in the battle for the championship. In recent years, BVB has repeatedly lacked the consistency needed to keep FC Bayern under pressure for an entire season.

Whether that will change this season remains to be seen in the coming months. Matthäus, however, already sees some positive developments at Borussia.

“Dortmund is doing a lot right right now,” emphasized the 65-year-old, adding: “Not everything, but a lot.”

Matthäus also doesn’t view difficult stretches during a game as entirely negative. He believes that a young team, in particular, can learn from such situations and grow as a result.

At FC Bayern, however, they’re likely keeping a close eye on their rival’s progress. Under Vincent Kompany, the Munich team is primarily focused on its own performance. But if Dortmund maintains its current consistency, an exciting two-horse race could develop in the Bundesliga.

The first direct showdown is just around the corner: At the end of October, FC Bayern will host BVB at the Allianz Arena. By then at the latest, Dortmund will be able to show just how dangerous the newly formed team really is for the record champions.
