It speaks to the rise of Nico O’Reilly, who is now a vital cog of the Manchester City machine. He began last season as a promising young player who could make a giant leap as a player. O’Reilly ended last season as an important player for Pep Guardiola’s side. His brace helped City beat Arsenal in last season’s Carabao Cup final and he earned a call-up to England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Entering the 2026-27 season, Nico O’Reilly is now a pivotal player for his team. The England international has now stated his willingness to play wherever he is required and he could split his time between midfield and left-back this season.
One of the strengths of Nico O’Reilly’s game is his versatility. Under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, O’Reilly was transformed from a midfielder into a powerful attacking left-back. His ability to get forward from left-back and take up dangerous attacking positions was a major weapon for Manchester City last season. Also, Nico O’Reilly started in midfield when required. His versatility and supremely technical ability see him loom as an important player for Enzo Maresca this season.
Speaking with mancity.com, ahead of Manchester City’s 2026-27 Premier League campaign getting underway, Nico O’Reilly revealed that he is willing to play whatever role necessary to help his team. O’Reilly revealed that he had told his new manager that whatever role Maresca needs him to fulfil, he will be there. O’Reilly explained: “I’m not sure – I had a chat with Enzo and I told him, ‘I’m ready to play anywhere’.”
“I’m able to adapt – whether that’s full-back or in midfield, I’m excited for the challenges and I’m ready to play. Wherever he needs to play, I’ll be ready to play there.”
Manchester City do lack for midfield options for their opening Premier League fixture against Bournemouth. The expectation is that Elliot Anderson will start in midfield. Mateo Kovacic started alongside him last weekend against Arsenal but the move didn’t work well at all. Nico O’Reilly should slot into a double pivot alongside Anderson today. That way, City will have a more athletic midfield capable of fulfilling the tasks that Enzo Maresca sets them. On paper, Nico O’Reilly and Elliot Anderson looks like the strongest midfield pairing Enzo Maresca can use with the options he has to call upon.
Looking further ahead, Nico O’Reilly could be a player who Enzo Maresca relies upon heavily in a variety of roles. O’Reilly’s prowess as a left-back is now well-known. As is his ability to play in midfield. There will be times and scenarios where Maresca needs O’Reilly in one role or the other. There is little doubt that Nico O’Reilly will thrive in any position and role he is asked to play.
Nico O’Reilly will do whatever it takes and take on any role to help Manchester City this season. He has now established himself as a key player for his team and his willingness to step in wherever he is required speaks to the figure that he has become for his team.
