A year on from Arthur Cabral’s €12 million switch to Botafogo, Benfica are still waiting for most of the fee, with only about €1 million received.
According to Glorioso 1904, court filings in Botafogo’s Judicial Recovery list an outstanding €11.1 million owed to Benfica. Cabral departed on 9 June 2025, with a further €3 million tied to performance targets.
The case sits against a difficult backdrop for Botafogo’s SAD after a period under American businessman John Textor. The club’s liabilities currently stand at €214 million.
Despite delayed payments, Benfica remain protected by a 10 percent sell-on clause covering any future profit on a Cabral transfer.
Botafogo have also been hit with a sixth FIFA transfer ban, tied to a debt from the January signing of Lucas Villalba from Nacional de Montevideo.
Five previous sanctions include four for unpaid sums to Atlanta United, Ludogorets, New York City and Zenit over Thiago Almada, Rwan Cruz, Santiago Rodríguez and Artur. The fifth relates to unpaid administrative fines.
