Stephen Mfuni unfortunately had his season ended by an ankle injury. The young defender left Manchester City to spend the second half of this season on loan at Watford. Mfuni impressed during his time playing at the Championship club, and he showed more than enough to suggest that he can be a future first team player at City. It has now been reported that Stephen Mfuni is due to have ankle surgery, and although his 2025/26 season is over, the young defender has options to pursue as to where to play next season.
Adam Drury has reported for the Watford Observer that Stephen Mfuni has returned to Manchester City. Furthermore, Drury reports that the young defender is set to have surgery to repair the season-ending injury he sustained. No timeline is provided in Drury’s report as to when Mfuni will return from injury.
It is also reported by Adam Drury that Watford are eager to see Stephen Mfuni return to the club for next season. As per Drury’s report, Watford hope that the good relationship between Manchester City and Watford will see City loan Mfuni to Watford once again. Furthermore, Drury reports that Bournemouth are also interested in potentially moving for Stephen Mfuni this summer.
It is a great shame for Stephen Mfuni to have his 2025-26 season ended by injury. During his brief spell at Watford, the young defender showed his prodigious talent and that he is ready to play consistent first-team football at a high level. Looking ahead to next season, another loan move is likely the best option for Mfuni to continue his development as a player.
One position that Manchester City is well-stocked in is centre-back. A fair assumption would be that Abdukodir Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and Marc Guehi would be City’s center-backs for next season. It also would not be a surprise if Vitor Reis is integrated into Pep Guardiola’s squad next season. There doesn’t seem to be room for Stephen Mfuni in the Manchester City squad for next season. He needs to be playing at a high level, so another loan move, whether that’s at Watford or Bournemouth, for example, is the best move for Mfuni to continue his development.
Unfortunately, Stephen Mfuni is set to have surgery on the ankle injury that ended his 2025-26 season. At 18 years of age, Mfuni has suffered the first injury setback of his career. The young defender has time on his side to recover from the injury, and he also has options as to where he can play next season. This speaks to how highly-regarded Mfuni is as a player, and another loan move may be Mfuni’s next step on his road to the Manchester City first team.
