Abdul Fatawu said he knew he had scored the best goal of his career the moment he struck from inside Leicester’s half against Ipswich, the effort putting the hosts 2-0 up in a 3-1 win.
"I always try this from long range." "It's good that it went in today and I feel amazing." "When I hit it, I didn't have any doubts." He told BBC Radio Leicester.
The Ghanaian took three touches to evade two Ipswich players, then shot from the edge of the centre circle after spotting goalkeeper Christian Walton well off his line. Walton scrambled back from the top of his box, but the ball sailed over him and bounced once into the net.
From 65.2m, it is the longest-range goal scored in the Championship since 2013-14. "I was just waiting for it," he said.
The strike was quickly likened to David Beckham’s goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996-97, which won Premier League goal of the season.
Fatawu’s finish went viral, but he focused on its value to the Foxes, who have stuttered on their return to the Championship after Premier League relegation. "It'll give more confidence for my team-mates and I'm just just happy about it and hope we can keep going for more wins," he said.
