Abel Ferreira marks five years at Palmeiras: ‘An honour and privilege’

Coach Abel Ferreira was honored this Tuesday (4th) by Palmeiras in celebration of his five years with the club, completed last week. Announced by Verdão on October 30, 2020, the Portuguese received a commemorative jersey from President Leila Pereira and Vice President Paulo Buosi at the Football Academy.

With ten titles won, Abel is the most successful coach in the history of Palmeiras alongside Oswaldo Brandão. Holder of various records and achievements, he is the only one to win the Libertadores, the Brazilian Championship, the Copa do Brasil, the Paulista, the Recopa Sudamericana, and the Supercopa do Brasil trophies and the first to win at least one title in five consecutive seasons.

Coincidentally, the five-year milestone was celebrated precisely last Thursday (30th), when the Greatest Champion of Brazil defeated LDU-EQU 4-0 and returned to the Libertadores final on a historic night at Allianz Parque. President Leila Pereira emphasized that she considers Abel Ferreira the greatest coach in Palmeiras' history.

“Abel said that Thursday was a magical day, but I usually say that these five years with us are magical. We had fantastic moments where we celebrated, difficult moments too, but the most important thing is that we always stayed together, looking forward, wanting more and more. I am eternally grateful and, I insist, Abel is the greatest coach in Palmeiras' history. Not only because of the titles we celebrated together but because of his work method, the person he is, his obsession with winning. I am very happy to be here, and we still have many chapters in our history. May it be infinite while it lasts, as Vinicius de Moraes said,” Leila Pereira stated.

Vice President Paulo Buosi recalled the coach's presentation to the press, held on November 4, 2020, in which he was present.

“By a twist of fate, that day Mr. Wilson Galiotte, father of Maurício Galiotte [president at the time], was buried, and it was up to me to make the presentation. I repeat what I said: Abel, the Palmeiras Family is with you in this work. May many victories, many titles come, and avanti, Palestra,” he said.

Abel and his coaching staff, which includes Portuguese assistants João Martins, Vitor Castanheira, Carlos Martinho, and Tiago Costa, have a total of 387 games for Palmeiras, with 226 wins, 91 draws, 70 losses, 661 goals scored, and 312 goals conceded. The coach also spoke about the five years with the club and his connection with the Palmeiras Family.

“I never imagined this journey would be so long, knowing a little about Brazil. But I also never imagined the luck I would have to join such a well-organized club, with structure and processes. Our president gives me and the staff all the conditions to focus on performing our work and not worry about anything else, except giving our best in each role. It is very difficult for a coach to have a leader like Leila, who is with you, especially in the most difficult moments,” he said. “I have great gratitude, esteem, and admiration for our president, who embodies the values of our club: being serious, honest, truthful. Being correct with our employees, loyal to our collaborators, our sponsors, and helping football to be better,” Abel added. ”It's been five years, but it feels like five months, it seems like everything went by so fast. We will continue together, and may we continue to make our club bigger and bigger. It is an honor and a privilege to be the coach of this great family that is Palmeiras. Avanti, Palestra!”
