Aberdeen team news

Aberdeen face a significant headache on the injury and suspension front heading into this Scottish Premiership fixture. The Dons will be without suspended captain Graeme Shinnie following his red card in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Kilmarnock, a blow that removes their midfield anchor and leadership from the centre of the park.

Squad issues compound Aberdeen’s problems, with Gavin Molloy continuing his recovery from a knee injury that is expected to keep him sidelined until mid-February. Both Kristers Tobers and Mats Knoester also remain unavailable, while goalkeeper Nick Suman misses out through ongoing issues.

However, interim manager Peter Leven has guided the squad with stability following Jimmy Thelin’s departure on January 3rd, with the 42-year-old seeking to prove his credentials for the permanent role. Leven previously achieved six victories in twelve matches during his first caretaker spell in early 2024.

Celtic team news

The Hoops received a significant boost on transfer deadline day as they brought in three new faces on loan: Junior Adamu from Freiburg, Benjamin Arthur from Brentford, and Joel Mvuka from Lorient.

Martin O’Neill’s primary concern remains the ongoing injury issues affecting his squad depth. Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Marcelo Saracchi all remain sidelined, while attacking midfielder Jota continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury. Callum Osmand is also unavailable as he continues rehabilitation from a hamstring problem.

Despite these absences, O’Neill successfully turned down a “really tempting” £25 million bid from Nottingham Forest for midfielder Arne Engels, with the Celtic board backing the manager’s desire to keep the Belgian on board for the title push.

Form

Aberdeen

Peter Leven’s Aberdeen have experienced mixed results since taking the interim reins, with the most recent outing highlighting their defensive vulnerabilities. Saturday’s 3-0 humbling at the hands of Kilmarnock proved particularly painful for the interim manager, who acknowledged his substitution timing was poor in allowing skipper Shinnie to receive a red card.

Before that defeat, Aberdeen had shown some positive signs with a 6-2 home victory over Livingston and a 1-0 Scottish Cup win against Raith Rovers, suggesting the squad possesses the capability to compete despite their league position.

Celtic

Martin O’Neill’s second stint at the helm has proven remarkably successful, as the Scottish champions extended their unbeaten run to seven matches with Sunday’s win over Falkirk (2-0).

The Hoops moved into second place, level on points with Rangers but crucially six points behind leaders Hearts with one game in hand. Before the weekend victory, Celtic had drawn consecutively against Hearts and Bologna in the Europa League, but has now scored six goals in their last two matches.

Predicted lineups

Aberdeen: Mitov; Devlin, Morrison, Nilsen, Frame; Bilalovic, Cameron, Clarkson, Armstrong, Keskinen; Nisbet.

Celtic: Schmeichel; Araujo, Murray, Scales, Tierney; Hyun-Jun, Engels, McGregor, Maeda; Cvancara, Nygren.
