Tammy Abraham spared Aston Villa’s blushes with a late equaliser as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against a disciplined Leeds United at Villa Park.
Villa had the chance to close the gap on the teams above them but never truly found their rhythm against a well-drilled Leeds side who looked sharper for much of the evening.
The visitors deservedly edged in front midway through the first half thanks to a moment of brilliance from Anton Stach. From fully 35 yards, the midfielder shaped to deliver into the box but instead unleashed a superb strike that flew beyond Emiliano Martínez and into the top corner.
Villa saw plenty of the ball after the break but lacked cutting edge. Their dominance in possession rarely translated into clear openings, with Ollie Watkins having an effort ruled out for offside and Karl Darlow standing firm when called upon.
Leeds even had the opportunity to put the contest beyond doubt, but Lukas Nmecha failed to convert from a promising position.
That miss proved costly. With two minutes remaining, a corner caused chaos in the Leeds area and after Ezri Konsa’s knockdown, Abraham reacted instinctively to divert the ball home.
It was a point salvaged rather than earned for Villa, while Leeds will view it as another hard-fought step towards survival.
