Blackburn Rovers have endured a miserable start to the season, and it does appear as though they may be circling the drain towards relegation from the Championship.

Rovers had again rallied late towards the end of the last campaign, missing out on an unlikely top six finish and the play-off places on the final day of last season.

The former Barnsley and West Bromwich Albion manager, Valerien Ismael, is under intense pressure at Ewood Park, having been heavily criticised by supporters before that late run of form last year.

It appears almost inevitable that Blackburn will eventually part company with Ismael as they get set to battle against the drop this season, with rumours back in April that Wayne Rooney was being lined up for a surprise and sensational move to the club.

As Blackburn prepare themselves for a dog fight in the second-tier, supporters are now keen to see the back of Ismael, and it will be intriguing to see if rumours reignite with regards to Rooney.

However, FLW’s Blackburn Fan Pundit, Simon Middlehurst, has urged the club to avoid appointing Rooney, even though he does want to see the back of Ismael.

“No, absolutely not," Simon told FLW.

“Rooney isn’t proven at all. He hasn’t had a successful stint as manager at any club he’s been to.

“I do think that Valerien Ismael now needs to lead Blackburn. He just hasn’t got the tactics. If you look at the recent game against Sheffield United, it was just confusing what he was trying to do.

“To be honest with you, I think there are a lot better managers out there than Rooney.

“Who would come to Blackburn? I’ve absolutely no idea with what is going on off the pitch and the fans’ discontent to Rudy Gestede and to the rest of the board and the owners.

"I don’t know who would take that job right now.”

Wayne Rooney should not replace Valerien Ismael at Blackburn Rovers under any circumstances

Blackburn do appear to find themselves in a desperate situation, but it has been the case for a while that neutrals from the outside have viewed them as relegation candidates before they plod along to a mid-table finish.

John Eustace had Rovers in the top six in February before he decided to return to Pride Park to save Derby County from relegation to League One.

Valerien Ismael was the subject of supporter protest, alongside furore against Director of Football Rudy Gestede and the rest of the board at the club in the spring.

It appears as though his departure is now imperative for Blackburn to ensure they push away from the bottom three and the relegation places, but Rooney is surely not the man to do that job.

Last season, he left Plymouth Argyle mid-way through the campaign having done irreparable damage to the eventually relegated Pilgrims. That came just a year after he had done the exact same thing at Birmingham City.
