Adam Idah joined Swansea City this summer from Celtic, but his place in the starting lineup is far from guaranteed.

Adam Idah joined Swansea City this summer for a record fee paid by the Welsh club whilst outside of the Premier League, joining from Scottish side Celtic, though he must earn his place in Alan Sheehan's lineup amid strong competition.

Swansea have started the new season off brightly, with two wins, two draws and one defeat in their opening five Championship games, whilst also knocking both Crawley Town and Plymouth Argyle out of the League Cup.

Under manager Alan Sheehan, the Swans impressed in the latter stages of the 2024/25 campaign whilst the Irishman was interim boss, but his performances on the touchline landed him a permanent role at the Liberty Stadium.

Now this season, there is a real buzz in the south of Wales, and not just because bitter rivals Cardiff City suffered relegation from the second tier last season, but because of the squad that has been assembled.

The likes of Cameron Burgess, Marko Stamenic, Ethan Galbraith, Malick Yalcouye and Zeidane Inoussa have all joined the club this summer, along with 34-time capped Irish international Idah, who switched from Glasgow to Swansea this summer in a potential £7 million fee from Celtic.

Despite the fee paid for Idah, the striker's place in the starting lineup is far from guaranteed, and he will seemingly have to earn his spot.

Adam Idah must compete with Zan Vipotnik, Liam Cullen and Bobby Wales for a starting berth in the Swans side

Also in the Swans ranks in the striking position is Slovenian international Zan Vipotnik, Welsh international Liam Cullen and Scottish youth international Bobby Wales.

Manager Sheehan has tended to lineup Swansea in a 4-2-3-1 system, meaning, with only room for one striker and numerous options, Idah may find it more difficult than he had originally hoped to break into the starting fold.

Vipotnik has started two of Swansea's five Championship games up top, with Cullen starting the other three. However, it is the Slovenian who has started the season on fire, having scored three goals and grabbed one assist in just 187 minutes in the second tier so far.

This double striker battle will no doubt present problems for manager Sheehan; good problems, but problems nevertheless, who will have to decide on who to start up top in their next fixture, a home tie against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.

The next league match for Swansea is a trip away to St Andrews against Birmingham City, where a huge call will have to be made about who leads the Swans line.

Adam Idah is no stranger to the Championship

Having come through the youth ranks at Norwich City, Idah is well aware of the demands of Championship football, having played 72 times for the Canaries in the second tier, scoring 11 times and assisting three times.

Idah joined Celtic for a reported fee of £9.5 million just last summer having spent the previous six months on-loan with the Scottish giants, but is already on the move once more, after falling out of favour under manager Brendan Rodgers.

Now back in the division where he scored his first senior league goal, Idah will be eager to establish himself as the star forward in the Swans ranks and displace both Vipotnik and Cullen.

Although his goal record in the second tier is not one to get you off of your seats, Idah is clearly a force to be reckoned with at this level, and now at 24-years-old having last played in the Championship in 2024, the Irishman will feel he has a point to prove.
