Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has urged his old club to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
The Red Devils spent part of August chasing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.
United were keen to bring in the Cameroonian but the Seagulls’ unwillingness to sell and mammoth price put the deal on ice to perhaps the winter or next summer.
Other midfielders are certainly on United’s radar though as there have been strong links to Crystal Palace’s Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
Former United player Rio Ferdinand has recently urged his former side to add Wharton to the side’s ranks and his former coach Meulensteen agrees wholeheartedly.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy podcast the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson gave a clear indication on who he feels would drastically improve United’s midfield.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been regularly criticised for their inability to win midfield battles in the Premier League and Meulensteen has claimed that Wharton is the answer.
He stated, “I kept saying it, and I said it off-air before to you as well as I absolutely rate him so highly, and that’s one of the players that I would have brought into Manchester United directly. Adam Wharton. Honestly, to God.”
When pressed on what he felt the England youngster would add to the team he stated, “what I like about Wharton is, honestly, you look at him, you analyse him. His intention is always to play forward, and he’s a good ball retainer.”
The Dutchman also added that, “he knows when to put a bit of a bit of juice to his pass, you know, breaking the lines a little bit of disguise, you know. A phenomenal player, honestly.”
Wharton has continued to impress this season with Crystal Palace flying high in third place in the league.
The 21-year-old has continued to be vital for the Eagles, playing in five of their six league games so far this season.
