AFCON 2025: Major blow for the Benin Cheetahs

On the eve of the official squad announcement for AFCON 2025, the Benin national team faces a double setback. The Cheetahs will have to do without Felipe Santos and Andréas Hountondji, two key players who will ultimately miss out on the tournament.

According to the Team Media Officer of the Benin Cheetahs, a recent injury to new international Felipe Santos means he won’t recover in time. As for Andréas Hountondji, he is neither physically nor mentally ready to compete in such a demanding tournament. These two absences come at the worst possible time and disrupt the team’s final preparations.

Head coach Gernot Rohr, who was counting heavily on these two players, will now have to rethink his plans and find quick solutions to fill the gaps. The final squad will be announced this Thursday, December 11, revealing the players who will bear the heavy responsibility of replacing Felipe and Hountondji.
