Conflicting reports have emerged in recent hours regarding the date of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. With speculation swirling about a possible postponement and assurances that the tournament will proceed as originally scheduled, confusion has taken hold.
The British newspaper The Guardian revealed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering moving the tournament to 2028 due to doubts about the readiness of the host nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The British media outlet has highlighted concerns over infrastructure, the ability to organize a tournament featuring 24 teams across 10 cities, as well as certain problems observed during the last CHAN edition.
Conversely, journalist Micky Jnr, who is known for his close ties to CAF, insists that AFCON 2027 is still scheduled to take place as planned, with no official decision having been made regarding a postponement.
According to the South African journalist, the countries involved in the "Pamoja 2027" bid continue to diligently fulfill their commitments. Tanzania and Uganda have already transferred $30 million each to CAF accounts in accordance with the hosting agreement, while Kenya is currently finalizing the necessary steps to meet its share.
Against this backdrop of conflicting information, the upcoming CAF Executive Committee meeting is set to be decisive in finally clarifying the official position regarding AFCON 2027.
