Afonso Moreira is to join Bayer Leverkusen for more than €32m including bonuses, a sale that should ease Lyon’s DNCG test next week.
According to L'Équipe, Lyon aim to finalise the move on Wednesday, with the 21-year-old due in Germany this afternoon for a medical. He should then sign a five-year contract.
Leverkusen’s proposal last week could reach €32m, and the final package, with easily attainable add-ons, is expected to be slightly higher, plus a percentage of any future profit.
The winger initially wanted to stay another year and was reluctant to join last season’s Bundesliga sixth, who will play only the Europa League. He accepted the switch as OL needed the sale before their DNCG hearing, due next week with the date not yet set, probably Monday or Tuesday. The situation recalls George Mikautadze last summer.
Moreira signed a new Lyon deal until 2030 only weeks ago with a pay rise, but Leverkusen’s offer is significantly higher.
Recruited for €2m from Sporting Portugal’s reserves less than a year ago, he emerged as OL’s revelation of the season. Lyon will replace him numerically with Belgian winger Julien Duranville, signed from Borussia Dortmund for €5.5m.
