Xabi Alonso declines to discuss failed Chelsea move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka | OneFootball

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso refused to discuss Granit Xhaka after the club’s pursuit of the Sunderland captain fell through.

According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international, who was understood to be drawn to the prospect of reuniting with Alonso after their successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland maintained throughout that Xhaka was not for sale, rejecting attempts to negotiate. He only arrived from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17million, and is seen as central to Régis Le Bris’ plans for the club’s European return.

Xhaka was initially open to talks but has since reaffirmed his commitment following discussions with the club. The chance to captain in Europe, along with Sunderland’s longer-term aims, proved influential.

Asked about Xhaka, Alonso replied: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” The move is not expected to progress and Sunderland consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
