After FC Bayern’s heated 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund, the focus was not only on the result. Above all, a hard tackle by Nico Schlotterbeck on Josip Stanisic caused discussion. The Bayern defender had clear words after the final whistle.

Stanisic spoke out clearly after the Bundesliga classic and focused on the scene early on. „I don’t understand exactly why the referee didn’t give a red,“ explained the 25-year-old after the game. For him, the situation was clear: „If I go in at shin height with an open sole and slide even further, that’s clearly a red for me.“

The right-back also referred to previous decisions. „We had a similar scene two years ago – I think Palhinha against Bochum. He clearly plays the ball, then touches the opponent with his sole and gets a straight red.“ They even lost the game back then. „I think Schlotterbeck was more than lucky today that he was allowed to stay on the pitch.“

Nico Schlotterbeck also commented on the controversial action after the final whistle. The Dortmund centre-back admitted in an interview on the Sky microphone: „I think a red card could have been given. I was lucky there.“

From Munich’s point of view, this decision would have been clear after the foul on Stanisic, but referee Sven Jablonski left it at a yellow card. Schlotterbeck was also on the verge of being sent off in two other situations – both when he celebrated his goal on the edge of the area and when he later fouled the Bayern defender from the penalty spot.

The Croatian international also commented on the penalty kick: „I was through and would have gone through. I felt the contact – it wasn’t a brutal foul, but it’s a penalty.“ In the situation, he decided quickly: „In that situation, I thought there was a higher chance that Harry would score from the spot than that I would force something from an acute angle. That’s why I accepted the contact.“

At the end of the game, there was no major exchange between the two players: „He just asked if everything was okay. I said, yes, you caught me pretty good.“ Stanisic also emphasized how dangerous the action could have ended: „Fortunately, I was wearing shin guards and didn’t have my full weight on my leg – otherwise a lot can happen.“
