Mohammed Fuseini completed a move to Derby County late on in the summer transfer window, and it's been revealed why he chose them over Birmingham.

Derby County completed the signing of Mohammed Fuseini on Deadline Day, as the Rams beat Birmingham City to landing his signature.

Fuseini had been on the books with Belgian side, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, but opted to join Derby for the 2026/27 season on loan in search of regular minutes.

The 24-year-old has been with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise since 2024, and has made 76 appearances in his two years with the club to date.

Birmingham City were rumoured to be keen on a deal to sign Fuseini as well, but the winger decided to push for a move to Derby instead.

Derby have had a mixed start to this year's campaign. They were winless from their opening four matches in all competitions, which included a defeat to Charlton Athletic in matchday one, and a draw with newly-promoted Cardiff City.

They were then beaten 3-0 on home soil by Swansea City, which saw supporters frustrated, and fearful as to how this season would go for John Eustace's side.

A 2-0 win over Portsmouth in midweek was much-needed, and Eustace will be pleased to get the first three points of the season under their belt.

Reinforcements were certainly needed, and the Derby supporters will be delighted to see Fuseini sign for the club late on in the summer transfer window.

Birmingham City were in pole position to strike a deal to sign Fuseini this summer, but oped to sign Hull City's Liam Millar instead, which opened the door for Derby to swoop in and sign the winger instead.

Fuseini's agent, Max Hagmayr, told Footy-Africa the reasons behind the midfielder's move to Derby, and labelled them as a 'traditional team', as well as revealing that there was considerable interest in the Ghana international.

"He wanted to enter English football, and we decided on Derby County, a traditional English team which shows him the best future prospects. We had a lot of interest in Mo. At least we were negotiating concretely with three English teams, one team from Ligue 1 in France and one team from the German Bundesliga."

Fuseini will be eager to make a name for himself in English football, having never played at this level before. Fuseini has a point to prove, and the Championship could be the ideal league for him to showcase his talent, and at the age of 24, he's likely to have his best years ahead of him.

Birmingham City already have some strong options in their squad, but they made the bold call to step away from negotiations to sign Fuseini late on in the summer transfer window.

Liam Millar was the player they pushed ahead with instead, and it'll be interesting to see whether the Hull City loanee can hit the ground running with the Blues.

If he doesn't, and Fuseini kicks on and fires Derby up the table, then Birmingham will be wondering what could have been if they had pushed ahead with their interest in the winger.

Derby didn't make the start they would have wanted in the Championship, and they certainly needed to add players of quality to their ranks before the transfer window slammed shut.

Fuseini is quick and direct, and has already shown his quality at times with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, having scored 15 goals in his time with the club to date.

He's featured in the Champions League and Europa League with them as well, and it's somewhat of a coup for the Rams to strike a deal to sign him.

If he can build on some exciting performances over the last couple of seasons, then Derby could have made a shrewd addition to their side.

Derby's current wide options aren't the strongest, and lacked a creative spark in the early stages of this year's campaign.

The Rams are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on West Ham United, in what is certain to be one of their toughest tests of the season.
