Ajax have completed the signing of Eloi Gómez (16), as reported by Spanish outlet SPORT and VoetbalPrimeur. The midfielder has joined from the youth team of FC Barcelona after his contract expired.
Gómez’s contract ended in June and it’s said that “Ajax reportedly convinced him both financially and sportingly.” According to SPORT, the midfielder is making a big jump in his salary and will play for Ajax’s U17s.
VoetbalPrimeur indicate that “the main reason for his transfer is the competition at Barça. Both in the youth and in the first team. In the youth academy, there are players such as Marc Bernal, Pedro Villar, Gerard Mullol, Brian Farinas and Tommy Marques. Goméz would not see himself as a fifth or sixth option for a position in midfield.”
Goméz was a regular player for FC Barcelona’s U19 team last season, and as per Barca Universal, his move to Amsterdam comes partly in response to Moroccan youth Abdellah Ouazane’s move to Real Madrid.
The arrival of the Barça talent is the second foreign reinforcement at Ajax U17, after French striker Romeo Garnier previously made the switch from Paris Saint-Germain.
