Ajax have signed Brazil international Caio Henrique from Monaco on a five-year contract to address a problem position. According to AjaxDaily, the deal involves a fee that could increase through add-ons.
The 28-year-old is left-sided and versatile, able to operate at left-back, centre-back or in central midfield.
Henrique spent the last six seasons with Monaco in Ligue 1, making 210 appearances and featuring regularly.
He came through Atletico Madrid’s system after leaving Santos but did not play in La Liga, his only senior outing for the club came in the Copa del Rey. Before his 2020 permanent switch to Monaco, he had loans with Parana, Fluminense and Gremio.
There have been suggestions that this signing is the start of a major rebuild, with up to 21 players potentially available for sale as Ajax look to overhaul the squad.
Technical director Jordi Cruyff is thought to be preparing to move out a large portion of the first team to fund 10-15 arrivals for the 2026/27 season.
The club have already offloaded Wout Weghorst, Chuba Akpom, Sivert Mannsverk, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Further departures are likely in the coming weeks even if all 21 are not sold.
Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and reached the Europa Conference League via a play-off win against FC Utrecht. Henrique’s profile appears a pragmatic fit as the Dutch giants try to rebound, with versatility potentially reducing the need for extra signings elsewhere.
