Ajax star Anton Gaaei has rued his side’s inability to secure a deal to sign Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen this summer.

The 21 year old Dane joined the Dutch giants last year from Viborg.

His compatriot Eriksen struggled massively for significant game time last season and there were numerous rumours about his future.

The 32 year old was reportedly told by United to find a new team before the window shut but this clearly failed to happen.

Spanish side Real Betis made a late loan move for the midfield man on deadline day but this was rejected out of hand by the player.

Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Gaaei claimed he was hoping that his side could seal a deal for Eriksen in the previous window.

Commenting on the rumours of an Ajax return for Eriksen he said, “I read a lot about it, and of course you hope for that when such a good Dane is written about.”

“He is one of the best in the Nordics, so I hoped for that, but it didn’t happen. Now we just have to do it as well as possible.”

After putting in a solid performance versus Switzerland Eriksen commented that he wanted more minutes at Old Trafford this season.

He is reportedly confident he will obtain more playing time as the games will come thick and fast for United once the Carabao Cup and Europa League commence after the international break.

Nonetheless, even should he be given more minutes, it has been reported that with his contract running out this season, it will be his last as a United player.

Perhaps Gaaei will get his wish next summer as Ajax technical director Alex Kroes confirmed in a recent interview that Eriksen was admired by the Dutch giants and he was certainly on a list of players they were aiming to sign in the past summer.

Therefore, Ajax must be seen as one of the former Tottenham Hotspur man’s most probable future destinations when his time at Old Trafford eventually does come to an end.
