Alan Shearer has chosen the eleven players (and manager) who most impressed him in this past weekend’s round of matches in the top tier.

The player turned pundit naming his Premier League team of the week.

The NUFC legend including two players who stood out in the Everton 1 Newcastle 4 match.

A great performance and a deserved victory, with United well worth their win and had a fair few more great chances to have scored more than the four they did get.

Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) “Excellent performance. Made some brilliant saves to keep a clean sheet, including two standouts to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen and Yerson Mosquera.”

Kenny Tete (Fulham) “Showed his quality at both ends of the pitch. Scored the opening goal to set Fulham on their way to a first away league win of the season and kept Spurs’ attackers quiet.”

Malick Thiaw (Newcastle United) “Thiaw epitomised everything Newcastle did well at Everton. Defended superbly and scored his first two goals for the club, including the fastest Premier League goal this season after just 52 seconds!”

Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea) “Scored with a brilliant glancing header and was a solid presence at the heart of Chelsea’s defence in their impressive draw with Arsenal.”

Dan Burn (Newcastle United)

“Excellent performance from the centre-back, who returned to the starting XI and formed a dominant partnership with Thiaw.”

Reece James (Chelsea) “Exceptional display from the skipper. Physically dominant in midfield, despite his partner in there, Caicedo, being sent off. Showed his class on the ball, with his corner creating Chalobah’s opener.”

Boubacar Kamara (Aston Villa) “Capped another brilliant midfield performance with a stunning long-range strike against Wolves, straight into the top corner, to give Villa all three points in the Midlands derby.”

Phil Foden (Man City) “Underlined why he’s so important to Manchester City, showing they can still win games when Erling Haaland doesn’t score. His stoppage-time winner could prove to be a big moment in the title race.”

Bruno Fernandes (Man U) “The captain was key as Manchester United made a big improvement in the second half. He set up both goals for Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount with a couple of clever free-kicks.”

Cody Gakpo (Liverpool) “Provided the crucial pass that Alexander Isak needed to score his first league goal for Liverpool. Gakpo went on to seal the win with a great finish of his own.”

Igor Thiago (Brentford) “Now in double figures for the season after scoring twice against Burnley. Showed great composure to take and score a penalty late on at 0-0, after missing one at Brighton last weekend.”

Manager: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea)

“Deserves so much credit for the way Chelsea played, especially as they were down to 10 men for so long. Maresca’s men were well organised, limiting the league leaders to only a handful of chances, and they fully deserved a share of the points.”

My thoughts

Can’t argue with either of the Newcastle United choices from Alan Shearer.

So many candidates though in black and white.

Ironic that with such a dominant away win and four goals scored, that it is two central defenders who are selected as the stand out players.

However, they were both excellent in defence as Everton were restricted to two efforts on target, plus the small fact that Malick Thiaw got two of the four goals AND Dan Burn that assist for Lewis Miley’s goal!
