Alan Shearer presents theory for how Chelsea secured Xabi Alonso ahead of Liverpool

Xabi Alonso has taken a new title at Chelsea, and according to Alan Shearer, that’s more than just window dressing.

Liverpool sacking Arne Slot has brought Chelsea’s name back into the headlines, as people are puzzled by why the Reds wouldn’t have tried to land Xabi Alonso before we did.
Alan Shearer has been speaking about both club’s managerial changes, and noted something in Alonso’s appointment that may be revealing.
“There’s one thing I would say about Xabi Alonso taking the Chelsea role: it’s not a coincidence he’s the ‘manager’ rather than a ‘head coach’ which suggests to me that he’s got so many things in his contract that it’ll be watertight,” Shearer pointed out in quotes picked up by Football.London.
“[The Chelsea project] had to have someone at the helm who was making big decisions. And I guess the title of manager means he’s going to be making big decisions, who’s coming in and who’s going out.
That was clearly a major part of the process of convincing Alonso to take the job. Perhaps Liverpool weren’t willing to make the same concessions. It certainly would explain a lot about how things ended up.
