Alavés suffered a painful defeat at Mestalla, with Lucas Boyé scoring twice on an eventful night that also brought red cards for Pacheco and Guevara.
According to AS, Toni Martínez won a penalty inside the opening 27 seconds. Boyé struck twice, the first from the spot and the second with a header. The hosts’ opener came when Guridi’s attempted clearance inside the box cannoned off Otto.
Pacheco conceded the penalty for 3-2, then saw red and will miss the Villarreal match. Goalkeeper Sivera impressed, preventing further damage and having little chance with the goals conceded. Protesoni departed injured in the first half, with Tenaglia alerting the bench.
Ángel enjoyed a standout first half before fading, repeatedly carving openings down his flank. Otto began on the left and finished on the right, short of his early-season level yet still an automatic pick. Antonio Blanco knitted play sensibly but ended the night exasperated by refereeing.
Carles Aleñá grafted and endured a difficult start to the second half, after which Denis Suárez changed the tempo, kept the ball, created danger and supplied an assist. For Guevara it was a night to forget, with costly losses of possession before his dismissal, though he did help balance midfield alongside Denis at times.
Toni Martínez worked tirelessly but had few clear chances to score.
Returning after three months, Mariano squandered a three-on-two counter with a selfish decision, passing up a major chance.
