According to El Correo, Nico was the outstanding performer in Alavés v Athletic. He burst to life after the break, scoring two superb goals that settled the derby. Gorka Guruzeta also impressed, supplying both assists while leading the press.

Unai Simón could do little with Antonio Blanco’s unmarked finish and was exposed again for Nahuel Tenaglia’s strike. He later won a late one on one against Jon Guridi to prevent a third.

Valverde changed it at half-time, withdrawing Iñaki Williams and Unai Gómez. Robert Navarro scored within seconds, after Simón’s long pass was flicked on by Sancet. Sancet later produced a fine goal after a risky touch had almost invited trouble.

Yeray was tidy at the back, his interception launching the move for Athletic’s fourth, which was Nico’s second. Yuri focused on his defensive duties, while Aritz Gorosabel struggled to affect play before Areso replaced him.

Aymeric Laporte endured a difficult outing, passive for Blanco’s opener and late for Tenaglia’s finish. Jauregizar’s slack passing led to Ruiz de Galarreta replacing him at the interval, while Rego mixed a fine cross with errors and had a soft penalty against him overturned for offside. Adama came on in added time for Nico.
