Alberto Gilardino has been appointed Parma head coach until the end of the Serie A season after ending his Pisa contract. He signed on Tuesday.

According to L'Équipe, Parma acted after Carlos Cuesta left on Sunday following a disagreement with the hierarchy. Gilardino was released by Pisa on Monday night, having not been on the bench there since February, and his deal includes a club option for two further seasons.

The Italian, 44, has managed Pro Vercelli, Siena, Genoa and Pisa since moving into coaching.

He returns to a club he represented as a striker from 2002 to 2005, scoring 56 goals in 116 games. Parma stayed up in 2004-05 after a two-legged play-off against Bologna.

His immediate brief is survival. Parma sit 15th in Serie A with 4 points from one win, one draw and three defeats.
