If ever there was a game of two halves, this was it. Ryan Mason’s team were laboured and abject in the first period having conceded twice in the opening eleven minutes while, after the break, two goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half brought them level and they dominated the remainder of the match and scored the winner with five minutes left.
Swansea’s opener was potentially the fastest goal ever scored at the Hawthorns, with Vipotnik lobbing Griffiths with just eleven seconds on the clock. Records suggest that George James scored for Albion against Nottingham Forest in 1924 after about five seconds, but timings were not so accurately recorded in those days and Vipotnik’s is the quickest that can be fully verified.
Another brace for Heggebø sees him replace Isaac Price as the Baggies’ top scorer this season, and it was notable that the Northern Irish international was withdrawn at half time as Mason made four changes in an attempt to change the flow of the game. Nat Phillips was another that was substituted, the first minutes that he has not been on the pitch in the Championship this season. With Price another that has started every league game this season, it will be interesting to see what Mason does for the trip to QPR next weekend.
The three points lifts Albion back into the top half of the table to within four points of the play-off places.
