Two controversial refereeing decisions were pivotal in denying the Baggies a third successive victory but they remain unbeaten with seven points from a possible nine. That is the same total that Albion have earned in first three games in four of the previous seven second tier campaigns.
Looking ahead to next week’s trip to Stoke City, it is s statistical anomaly that, in all of their second tier campaigns since the division had 24 teams, Albion have only once lost the fourth game of the season, at Southend United in 1995. The Baggies have won the fourth game of the season in twelve of the last fourteen such campaigns, including the memorable 7-1 victory over QPR seven years ago.
