CD Castellón said in a statement that Gaizka Alboniga-Menor has joined on a free after completing his time in Athletic Club’s academy. The 21-year-old midfielder will link up with Castellón B.

The Basque player spent almost his entire development at Lezama, progressing from alevín level through to the end of last season.

He played three campaigns for Basconia, Athletic’s second reserve side, gaining experience and pushing for promotion to Segunda Federación in consecutive years. Promotion arrived at the second attempt, with Alboniga-Menor scoring six goals and establishing himself as a key figure.

His form also brought a Primera Federación debut with Bilbao Athletic, where he featured across two matchdays before returning to Basconia. In his first season in Segunda RFEF he added another six goals, underlining his threat from midfield.

His standout youth year came at juvenil age, when he struck nine in the national top tier.

Although the move was made official this afternoon, he attended yesterday’s friendly between Castellón B and Atlético Saguntino, which finished 1-3 to the visitors.

He also trained alone on the Gaetà Huguet pitches in Castellón kit, taking his first steps as part of the albinegro set-up.
