Alejandro Grimaldo has left Bayer Leverkusen to join Atlético Madrid.
The club said in a statement that the 30-year-old Spain international has been sold to the La Liga side.
He returns to his home country after three years at Leverkusen, where he won the German double in 2023/24.
Managing director for sport Simon Rolfes hailed Grimaldo’s impact, saying his style helped shape the Werkself and his free kicks became a hallmark, before offering thanks and best wishes for his La Liga move.
In a heartfelt farewell, Grimaldo reflected on an unbeaten 2024 league title, that year’s cup triumph and a run to the Europa League final, adding that the club and its supporters enriched his life. He described the switch as the realisation of a lifelong wish to play in his homeland with a top team competing for major honours.
Grimaldo departs having made 145 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 30 goals and providing 45 assists.
