Alex Greenwood free-kick helps Man City defeat Charlton | OneFootball

There has been lots of talk about the validity of the success of Manchester City's men's team in the last 24 hours but the women put in a spirited effort to defeat away to Charlton Athletic.

The Citizens were coming off a 2-2 draw away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek and struggled to put away newly-promoted Charlton despite their dominance.

The only goal of the game in the 36th minute after Grace Clinton was fouled on the edge of the area. Defender Alex Greenwood stepped up and whipped her effort beyond Sophie Whitehouse to make it 1-0.

City pressure continued in the second half but the Addicks did have chances with Cassandra Korhonen having a great opportunity when she latched onto the end of Jodie Hutton's cross but her effort was straight at goalkeeper Earth Cummings.

Andrée Jeglertz's side probably should have had a penalty late but really should taken some of their opportunities which would have made for a more comfortable end to the game.

Still, that Greenwood goal was enough to make it four wins out of four for City who remain top of the WSL with rock bottom after having lost all of their league games so far this season.
