Alex Greenwood gives City slender win over Charlton

An Alex Greenwood free-kick saw Manchester City claim all three points in a tightly fought contest against newly promoted Charlton. The meeting was the first between the two sides. The win sees the Sky Blues remain top of the table whilst Charlton remain 12th having failed to secure a single point in their opening four league games.

How It Went

The opening half hour of the match saw the visitors dominate much of the play. City did not have it all their own way, however, as Charlton had several good chances in the opening exchanges. Hawa Cissoko’s shot marked the first real chance of the match. It was the visitors who eventually broke the deadlock with 36 minutes on the clock. A free kick in a dangerous area saw City keeper Alex Greenwood find the back of the net to put her side ahead.

The second half passed with numerous chances for both sides however neither team were able to add to the scoreline. Despite the defeat, Charlton will take plenty of positives from the match having proved a tough contest for the reigning WSL Champions.
