He called his first two years at the club special, noting the fast pace and constant focus on new goals. His family have settled in Rio de Janeiro, which influenced the decision, and he is happy to stay and keep competing for titles.

Football director José Boto highlighted his technical quality and tactical importance, and also his influence away from matchdays. He described Alex Sandro as a reference for the squad who brings experience, helps unite the group and handles difficult moments, factors considered in the renewal.

The defender had been eligible to sign a pre-contract with another club, and the new agreement was in place before his World Cup involvement with Brazil. The physical demands of Brazilian football almost prompted a change of plan for next year, but the offer from the Rio side appealed.

Flamengo visit Chapecoense on Tuesday at 21:30 Brasília time in the 19th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
