Alexander Schwolow joins Mainz after Hearts’ Champions League exit | OneFootball

According to BuLi News, Alexander Schwolow has joined Mainz from Hearts, returning to the Bundesliga after one season in Scotland.

Under an agreement between the clubs, he played the Champions League preliminary qualifiers against Sturm Graz before linking up with his new team.

It proved a bleak tie for Schwolow and Hearts, as Sturm Graz, who signed Nelson Weiper on loan from Mainz this month, advanced 6-0 on aggregate.

Schwolow also missed out on the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership title, with Celtic overtaking Hearts on the final day. Hearts now face Benfica in a Europa League qualifying tie.

The 34-year-old has joined Mainz’s preparation for the new season under Urs Fischer. He was in Fischer’s Union Berlin squad during their Champions League campaign, though his seven appearances came after the Swiss coach left.

A former Germany youth international, Schwolow has made over 200 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg, Hertha BSC, Schalke and Union Berlin. Mainz’s goalkeeping group has changed after second-choice Daniel Batz moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer last month.
