Alexis Mac Allister has expressed sadness at Liverpool's inability to offer him a new deal as he prepared for Wednesday's match.
He spoke at a pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's 21:00 meeting with Atlético Madrid. According to L'Équipe, the midfielder said his agent had indicated the club were not in a position to renew an agreement that runs to June 2028.
He framed the situation as disappointing given Liverpool won the Premier League together in 2025, adding that after tough spells he continues to give his best.
Mac Allister said there were options to leave this summer, but for now he feels he is at the right club.
Sitting alongside him, manager Andoni Iraola said the important thing is that the player wants to be at Liverpool and continue, emphasising his value to the team.
Since 2023 the 27-year-old has made 153 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 20 assists. He has 54 caps and seven goals for Argentina.
