Algeria will take on Switzerland in their Round of 32 knockout clash on Friday at BC Place, with both sides aiming to secure a place in the next stage of the tournament.
Algeria, on the other hand, had a much more difficult journey through the group stage but managed to progress as one of the best third-placed teams from Group J. They began with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Argentina but responded well by beating Jordan 2-1. Their qualification was secured after a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria, with veteran Riyad Mahrez scoring twice in that match.
The Desert Foxes enter the knockout rounds showing strong resilience after battling through a challenging group.
However, they have suffered a significant setback in attack, as Mohamed El Amine Amoura has been ruled out of the match due to a serious hamstring injury picked up earlier in the tournament.
Defensively, head coach Vladimir Petkovic—who previously managed Switzerland for seven years—is expected to make adjustments. Rayan Aït-Nouri is likely to return to the starting lineup at left-back, replacing Jaouen Hadjam. In midfield, experienced player Nabil Bentaleb is set to play a key role in shielding the defence as he prepares to earn his 64th international cap.
Algeria will once again rely heavily on captain Riyad Mahrez, who will lead the team and provide creativity from the wings as they aim to continue their World Cup journey.
Possible starting XI: Zidane; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait-Nouri; Boudaoui, Bentaleb; Mahrez, Maza, Chaibi; Gouiri
The match will kick off at 4am BST on Friday, 3rd July.
