Senegal will be without first-choice goalkeeper Édouard Mendy for Wednesday’s World Cup last-32 meeting with Belgium at 22:00 French time, coach Pape Thiaw said on Tuesday. According to L'Équipe, Mendy suffered a left knee problem against Norway on 23 June.

After the Iraq game, the former Chelsea keeper flew to Jeddah and his club Al-Ahli for further tests.

In Mendy’s absence, the Lions of Teranga will turn to Le Havre’s Mory Diaw, who started in the 5-0 win over Iraq.

Thiaw said that although Mendy is not fit to play, he will be with the squad. He added that they hope to win so the goalkeeper can rejoin them later in the tournament.

The coach also praised Diaw’s display against Iraq, noting the clean sheet, and said he hopes the keeper can produce the same level on Wednesday.
