Liverpool picked up a couple of key injuries in Tuesday’s defeat to Galatasaray, with Arne Slot confirming at least one starter will miss Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.

At the beginning of last week, Liverpool had a completely clean injury record. Arne Slot’s side were pretty much the only team in the division not to have a single player out, which was obviously a boost to their chances of winning matches.

Yet things have taken a turn in the last few days, with young centre-back Giovanni Leoni suffering an ACL injury, and Federico Chiesa struggling with a knock that ruled him out of Tuesday’s match against Galatasaray.

On top of those two, Alisson Becker and Hugo Ekitike picked up new problems in Liverpool’s defeat in Turkey.

Both players were forced out of action, and Slot didn’t seem positive about Alisson’s injury in particular.

“It’s never positive if you go off like this,” Slot said. “You can be sure he’s not going to play on Saturday (against Chelsea).”

As for Ekitike, Slot suggested the striker wasn’t feeling too bad after the game, but that the club will have to make further assessments ahead of the weekend.

“He felt something when he had to reach for the ball,” Slot explained. “After the game, that’s always the difficult thing with these moments when players feel like it is not too bad, but when you just walk around it is something different than when you make a sprint or have to shoot on target.

“He said he couldn’t continue so we had to take him off. Let’s see how he is for the weekend.”

Chiesa should be back in time for the Chelsea match, but there’s now a realistic prospect that Leoni, Alisson, and Ekitike all miss out.

In fairness, that doesn’t put Liverpool much worse off than any other Premier League club right now. But it just compounds their woes after two defeats in a few days.
