The Championship season is motoring on and plenty of clubs are being judged on their performance in comparison to how much they are spending on their squad.

Taking part in England's second tier is not a cheap endeavour; plenty of club owners will be seeing their weekly wage budget fly out of the club and wonder where all that money is going.

But where does each team in the Championship rank based on their weekly wage bill? Football League World takes a look at the current picture...

24 ? ? Charlton Athletic (£175,062)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given they were the lowest-ranked side to gain entry to the second tier last season, Charlton Athletic boast the lowest weekly wage bill of the entire league.

In total, as per estimates by Capology, who will provide all the figures throughout this article, the Addicks spend £175,062 per week on player wages.

Goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski makes up a significant proportion of that, by far the club's highest earner on £20,000 per week.

Portsmouth have been able to keep their expenditure relatively low, with an estimated wage bill of just £184,000 per week.

Much like Charlton, their highest-paid player, John Swift, brings in £20,000, with the majority of the rest of the squad on significantly less.

Still, it will be surprising to some that Pompey can run their entire squad on around the same amount that many top-end Premier League players earn individually.

22 ? ? Sheffield Wednesday (£221,450)

Sheffield Wednesday have had no end of issues with wages this season under former owner Dejphon Chansiri, with the club missing a number of paydays under his stewardship.

Thankfully, the Owls are now in the hands of administrators, who have a much better handle on things while a new permanent owner is found.

There are still significant sums to find each week, however, with an estimated player wage bill of £221,450 to pay every seven days, alongside the rest of the club staff.

21 ? ? Swansea City (£242,500)

Swansea City are next on the list, with an estimated weekly wage bill of £242,500.

Over 20 percent of that figure is being spent on two players, Adam Idah and Cameron Burgess, who both command a wage of £25,000 per week.

Given Idah is not yet a nailed-on starter, some Swans may question whether that is the best use of their limited funds, but at 24 years old, there is plenty of time for the striker to come good.

Perhaps the shock of the Championship season so far is Coventry City, who have kicked off the campaign as a free-scoring force under Frank Lampard.

What makes that more shocking is that the Sky Blues are on the lower end of the wage bill scale, clocking just £249,000 per week.

Their top earners, Luke Woolfenden, Matt Grimes, Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, are on £25,000 per week, and are mostly earning every penny of it.

Coming in marginally higher than Coventry is Blackburn Rovers, with a weekly wage bill of £252,038.

Todd Cantwell makes up a significant portion of that, earning £30,000 per week, exactly double the next highest earner.

18 ? ? Bristol City (£259,008)

Another overperformer compared to their wage bill is Bristol City.

That's despite their limited budget, and also losing manager Liam Manning at the end of last season.

They've managed that on a weekly wage bill of just £259,008 under new boss Gerhard Struber.

17 ? ? Queens Park Rangers (£259,631)

Just a few hundred pounds ahead of Bristol City is Queens Park Rangers, with an estimated weekly wage bill of £259,631.

They count defender Steve Cook as their top earner on £30,000 per week, likely awarded based on his extensive experience in the Championship and the Premier League.

16 ? ? Oxford United (£264,450)

Entering the middle chunk of wage bills in the Championship, Oxford United are paying £264,450 to their players every week.

That isn't necessarily producing results for the side as things stand.

However, their top earner is relatively modest, with defender Ben Davies their highest-paid player on £20,000, and United may not be paying all of that, with the 30-year-old on loan from Scottish side Rangers.

15 ? ? Preston North End (£266,200)

Preston North End are another side to have pushed into the upper echelons of the second tier, despite having a relatively modest wage bill.

They spend £266,200 per week on their players, with their top earner, Lewis Dobbin, on just £17,500, of which the Lilywhites may only be paying a proportion, with the winger on loan from Aston Villa.
