Eintracht came away with a point from a hard-fought 1-1 draw at HSV, with Hugo Larsson scoring the equaliser and the Eagles’ final goal of 2025.
Four changes Head coach Dino Toppmöller shuffled his side in four positions for the trip to Hamburg. Aurèle Amenda, Hugo Larsson, Nathaniel Brown and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya all started, with Ellyes Skhiri and Farès Chaibi both at the Africa Cup of Nations, Arthur Theate suspended and Mario Götze out due to illness.HSV go in front The home side took the lead in the 19th minute after capitalising on a mistake in Eintracht’s backline. A Nnamdi Collins pass was too imprecise and landed straight at the feet of Albert Sambi Lokonga, who skipped past Robin Koch and drilled the ball low inside the left-hand post. Larsson equalisesCollins made amends in the 27th minute with a diagonal pass into the box for Brown, who volleyed it across the face of goal for Larsson to smash in the vital equaliser from seven metres out.
Eintracht were fortunate not to fall behind again just 60 seconds later when Rayan Philippe crashed a shot off the crossbar. Moments after that, Miro Muheim narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort (30’).
Level at the breakThe Eagles tightened things up at the back after that and didn’t give Hamburg any more chances, leaving the game all square at the interval. Højlund on for BahoyaOscar Højlund replaced Bahoya at the start of the second half, and the impact was immediately apparent. With an extra body in the middle of the pitch, Eintracht began bossing the game, refusing to allow the home side the chance to string any passes together.
Larsson saw a shot blocked in the 57th minute, and moments later Ansgar Knauff had the first clear-cut opening of the half, but his acrobatic overhead kick from inside the six-yard box was hooked away from the far corner by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes (59’).
HSV’s advances into Eintracht territory continued to dwindle, with Eintracht pushing for a second goal. Mo Dahoud had a go from long range (74’) before Bakary Jatta somehow cleared what looked to be a certain goal from Brown off the line (77’).
Tense at the end
That kickstarted a nervy finale, including nine minutes of stoppage time, in which the Eagles continued to hunt for an overdue winner, and HSV looked to pounce on the counter. However, neither side was able to add to the scoreline, leaving each with a point going into the Christmas break.
