Thiago Almada has dashed Palmeiras’ plans, saying he will remain at Atlético de Madrid after clarifying his future in an interview on Friday.
"We had a lot of rumours, but I was calm, doing my job at the club and trying to show the coach I want to be here. It is clear I will stay at Atlético," he said, speaking to Afa Estudio.
At the start of the month, Palmeiras opened talks with the player’s representatives to try to move a deal forward. From the outset it was seen as difficult, yet the club worked to persuade him.
At the time, Atlético de Madrid were said to be ready to put him on the market to make room for other signings, with an asking price of 20 million euros, about R$ 124.7 million, for 50 percent of his economic rights.
An Argentina international midfielder, Almada was a leading figure in Botafogo’s 2024 Libertadores triumph. That form earned him further national team call-ups, where he also impressed.
Palmeiras maintained contact through January and are targeting more experienced additions in this window. Another attacking option is Jhon Arias at Wolverhampton in England, though talks have not advanced.
