Xabi Alonso insists that Enzo Fernandez is still a Chelsea player amid reports linking him with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City, but offered no guarantees that he will remain so.
City are interested in the Argentina international after selling Rodri to Barcelona for a £65.4 million transfer fee.
Chelsea reportedly set a deadline of 5pm last Friday for City to make a bid of at least £120 million, but no offer arrived, and they may now demand an even higher fee for the midfielder.
Real Madrid had also been linked with the 25-year-old, who said in April that he would one day like to live in the Spanish capital, but Los Blancos have denied holding any interest in the player.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League game against Fulham on Monday, Alonso addressed Fernandez’ is indeed a’ future at Chelsea.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player, a top, top player,” he said. “He’s training really well, he started ten days ago with the team, very integrated. We are happy with him and he is getting ready for Monday.”
Asked whether or not Fernandez has told him he wishes to stay at Stamford Bridge, Alonso responded: “He’s training really well and I see him with a good attitude and that’s what we want. He’s trying his best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.”
Several Chelsea players, including Liam Delap, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi, are reportedly up for sale. Alonso says he is more than content with his squad heading into the new season.
“I’m very happy I think we have made many right choices. Very good balance in terms of quality, personality, maturity, different stages of their career, good momentum. We are in a good position I would say.”
Many of Alonso’s players participated at the FIFA World Cup this past summer, and the new manager admits that some of them will need a little longer before they return to action.
“Let’s see,” he added. “We will check, we will assess. But for sure because of the World Cup they came later and may need a bit more time. But they are for sure selectable for the line up.”Read – The biggest transfer fees paid by Chelsea
