Xabi Alonso moved to cool speculation over Enzo Fernandez, saying the midfielder remains central to Chelsea’s plans despite links to Manchester City ahead of Monday’s Premier League opener against Fulham.

According to Goal.com, Alonso said Fernandez is committed, has trained very well since rejoining the group 10 days ago, and is preparing for the start of the season.

Fernandez received a mixed reception from sections of the support during a recent pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad, with boos heard when his name was announced and again when he came on.

Asked if the Argentine had explicitly pledged to stay, Alonso highlighted the player’s professionalism and focus on being ready for the Premier League kick-off.

City, now led by former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, have been long-term admirers. They did not meet Chelsea’s £120m valuation before last Friday’s 5pm deadline, and while the window remains open until September 1, any late move would depend on an agreement between all parties.

Fernandez, a 2022 World Cup winner, joined Chelsea for £107m in 2023. He made 54 appearances last season across all competitions, scoring 15 goals with seven assists, and lifted the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
