Eder Militao’s injury left significant doubt as to how Xabi Alonso would fill in the central defensive positions against Elche last night, and the manager eventually handed the start to Raul Asencio despite the player not looking in his element so far in the campaign.

As it turns out, the youngster was one of the silver linings of Real Madrid’s game on the night, for his performance not only caught the eyes of the manager but was also noticed by fans across the globe.

Playing full 90 minutes last night, the centre-back racked up three interceptions, six clearances, blocked two shots, and made two recoveries for Real Madrid. Further, he won five of his eight duels.

Alonso’s personal wishes

As relayed in Defensa Central in a recent update, Asencio’s positive showing did not go unnoticed by Xabi Alonso’s sight and the manager took note of the player’s improvement.

In fact, the coach even went and personally congratulated the academy graduate after the game, making it known to him that his efforts were not in vain.

There is no doubt that Militao will walk into the lineup once again when he returns to complete fitness.

Asencio’s performance, however, makes a strong case for him to see more regular minutes at least as a substitute if not a rotational option.

With the UEFA Champions League clash against Olympiacos coming up midweek, one would expect Asencio to retain the starting spot on the night.

Needless to say, he will be crucial if Los Blancos are to break their streak of three winless games and will look to keep up his good run of form.

So far this season, the youngster has started just four league games for Real Madrid and has overseen two clean sheets for Los Blancos.
