The first round of league matches played this midweek over three days/nights.

Tuesday night seeing a very eventful opening Champions League night.

Twelve clubs in action last night, then a dozen again tonight, before the final 12 including Newcastle United play.

It was a former Newcastle United player who grabbed the headlines in Turin.

An amazing match saw Juventus v Borussia Dortmund goalless until the 52nd minute, then things went a little crazy.

The German side going 1-0 up and 2-1 up, only for the home team to equalise each time.

Dortmund then looked to have sealed the win for sure when making it 3-2 on 74 minutes and then 4-2, after former Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly conceded a penalty.

However, in the fourth minute of added time it was Juventus with a penalty of their own pulling it back to 4-3 down, then astonishingly, Lloyd Kelly popping up in the 96th minute to grab what had looked a most unlikely point for Juventus.

Juventus 4 Borussia Dortmund 4 the final score.

It is only the second time in the Champions League era where eight goals have been scored in the second half.

Benfica 2 Qarabag 3

Talk about changing fortunes.

Benfica 2-0 up at home inside 16 minutes in front of over 53,000 fans. The away side fight back and end up winning with an 86th minute goal and Benfica manager Bruno Lage sacked straight after the defeat.

PSV 1 Union Saint-Gilloise 3

The team from Belgium with a surprise 3-0 lead and PSV only able to get a 90th minute consolation goal.

Real Madrid 2 Marseille 1

The Spanish side very lucky to scrape through thanks to two Mbappe penalties. Marseille taking a 22nd minute lead and Mbappe’s second penalty coming after Real Madrid had been reduced to ten men.

Spurs 1 Villarreal 0

I had the misfortune to watch most of this game. Absolutely woeful, both the match and the atmosphere, it was all but non-existent. The whole thing summed up by the fact the only goal was a fourth minute own goal, a shocker from the visiting keeper.

Athletic Bilbao 0 Arsenal 2

This wasn’t a great deal better than the Spurs match, although the atmosphere certainly was! The home team on top and Arsenal creating next to no chances, then the financial power and squad strength showing through, as subs Martinelli and Trossard scored in the final twenty minutes for a lucky Arteta win.
