Amex Stadium’s 15-year evolution and the next phase to reshape South Stand | OneFootball

Fifteen years after Brighton opened the Amex, the ground has been reshaped and another upgrade is under way.

The Amex opened on Saturday 6 August 2011 against Doncaster Rovers. Will Buckley came on to score twice on debut, the second a 96th-minute winner.

Albion left Withdean in League One and began at Falmer in the Championship. Six years later came a Premier League opener with Manchester City, then Europa League nights against AEK Athens, Ajax, Marseille and Roma.

The East Upper arrived in 2012 and the corners were filled in 2012-13, taking capacity past 30,000. TV and corporate spaces followed, plus a broadcast compound, The Terrace and an expanded megastore.

Control moved to the North East Corner and a bigger North West screen went in. The North Stand Shelf added about 650 seats and a 1901 Pub, with any acoustic change still to be judged.

Work is ongoing on a new car park and players’ entrance in the north west. A new South East screen precedes a South Stand rebuild that removes the old screen and Heineken Lounge, adds seats and creates a multi-tier away area in the South West Corner. Home fans will gain a safe-standing singing section behind the south goal.

Capacity is set to approach 32,500. By 2030 a 10,000-seat stadium for Brighton Women is planned behind the East Stand at Bennett’s Field.
