Ahead of the Champions League matchday 2 clash between AS Monaco and the Citizens at the Stade Louis-II (kick-off 9 p.m.), here's a look at the numbers you need to keep in mind, with our provider Opta.
A big match that brings back memories. As they face off for the third time in the Champions League in the second matchday of the league phase, AS Monaco and Manchester City will be in action at the Stade Louis-II (21h), each with arguments to make. Here are the statistics you need to know before kick-off, with the help of our supplier Opta. 📊
The only previous meetings between AS Monaco and Manchester City took place in the 2016-2017 Champions League round of 16, where the French club qualified on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate score (3-1 home win, 5-3 away loss).
The club from the Principality is one of only two teams, along with Real Madrid in 2024-2025 (in the play-offs), to have eliminated a Pep Guardiola team in the Champions League before the quarter-finals (Manchester City were eliminated in the round of 16 in 2016-2017).
After losing to the Rouge et Blanc at the Stade Louis-II in March 2017, the Citizens coach could lose his first two away matches against the same opponent for only the third time in his coaching career (against Barcelona in October 2016 and Liverpool in January 2018).
AS Monaco have lost only one of their seven home games against English teams in the Champions League (5 wins, 1 draw), their only defeat coming against Arsenal in March 2015 (0-2). The club from the Rock won all three matches of this type played during the group/league stage: 1-0 against Liverpool in 2004-2005, 2-1 against Tottenham in 2016-2017 and 1-0 against Aston Villa in 2024-2025.
In his last Champions League match for the Sky Blues, Erling Haaland became the fastest player to reach 50 goals in the competition (in 49 appearances). However, among the 10 players to have scored at least 50 goals in the Champions League, only Raúl (31%) has a lower away goalscoring percentage than Haaland (32% – 34 at home, 16 away).
The Monegasques have won only one of their last seven Champions League matches (1 D, 5 L), after being unbeaten in the previous four (3 W, 1 D). Three of their five defeats during this period have come by three goals or more, including the last match against Club Brugge (4-1).
In his first Champions League match in exactly one year (September 2024 against Inter Milan), Rodri made 17 line-breaking passes against Napoli, the second-highest total among midfielders in the first matchday of the 2025-2026 Champions League (20 for Pedri against Newcastle).
Despite AS Monaco’s heavy defeat to Club Brugge on the first matchday of the 2025-2026 league phase (4-1), Lamine Camara was the player of the match, completing the most line-breaking passes (15), recovering the most balls (10), and making the most tackles (4).
Phil Foden provided eight final passes before a shot on Matchday 1 against Napoli, the highest total for a player in his team’s opening match in a Champions League campaign since Maycon with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2021-2022 (8 against Sheriff Tiraspol).
Pep Guardiola has lost only two of his 33 matches played in the first two matches of a Champions League campaign (26 wins, 5 draws). However, both of these defeats came against French teams, against Lyon in 2018-2019 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2021-2022.
