The injury history of John Stones is well-documented. When fully fit, Stones is a vital player for Manchester City. The issue over the past two seasons is that Stones has not been able to get on the pitch consistently. This season, Stones has played six matches for Manchester City. He has missed two matches due to injury and has been an unused substitute on two other occasions. Despite his lack of consistent football this season, John Stones was called up by Thomas Tuchel for England’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia and friendly against Wales. Stones got through both matches unscathed, in good news for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The positive for John Stones and Manchester City is that he got through both of England’s matches unscathed. Stones played 80 minutes in England’s 3-nil friendly win over Wales. He backed that up by playing 71 minutes in England’s 5-nil win over Latvia, which confirmed their place in the 2026 World Cup. Stones also grabbed an assist in Thomas Tuchel’s side’s win over Latvia as he put in a quality display.
But more important than Stones’ performance, is the fact that he seemingly hasn’t sustained any fresh injury concerns. Stones has gotten minutes into his legs over the international break, and that is welcome news for Pep Guardiola’s side. The fact that he looks to be fully fit is another major positive.
John Stones has a vital role to play for Manchester City. He offers a different option at centre-back than any other centre-back in the City squad, with his quality in possession and ability to drift into midfield. Also, with a busy schedule ahead, Pep Guardiola will be hoping to have a full squad available to utilise. Stones is also a key part of that equation.
It would seem that John Stones will return to Manchester City fully fit from international duty. Unless he has picked up any niggles playing last night, he should be able to play an important role for his team once club football returns this weekend.
