Ander Herrera has returned to Zaragoza to play under Ibai Gómez in Primera RFEF. According to El Correo, he has agreed a one-season deal. The crisis-hit club were relegated last season and are seeking a route back to professional football.
Herrera first wore the Zaragoza shirt at 11 after arriving from Amistad. He rose through the academy to debut on 1 February 2009 against Levante UD. His impact in the second half of 2008-09 helped secure promotion to Primera División and he established himself across the next two campaigns.
Athletic signed him in 2011, where he matured under Marcelo Bielsa. In his first season in Bilbao he reached the Europa League and Copa del Rey finals, and delivered consistently across more than 100 games in that initial spell.
He later returned to Athletic after an international stint in which he won major trophies with Manchester United and PSG. Back in Bilbao, his name became linked to the club’s 25th Cup.
Herrera then spent two years in Argentina with Boca Juniors, featuring in competitions including the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup. He now boasts close to 600 professional appearances.
